Why do I need to be a certified coach?

Coaches certified through Hockey Alberta provide leadership, education, instruction and contribute to the growth of more than 64,000 athletes across the province. Along with the life lessons imparted by coaches, the importance of hockey specific skills and a coach’s ability to teach them are directly related to the development of players.

Outside of the coaching foundation set in Coach Level, Checking, and Development 1 courses, Hockey Alberta offers Instructional Stream Courses throughout the province. The instructional stream courses are offered free of charge and consists of classroom and on ice instruction totaling 3 hours. These courses have been developed to offer coaches a practical session on teaching skills and tactics in the areas of Skating, Developing Defencemen, Goaltending, Skills and Small Area Games.

Along with the in-person training sessions, there are a number of resources and tools that will aid you in coaching, and more specifically, planning practices and teaching skills.

Please check Hockey Alberta pages regularly, as clinic dates, new resources and other important information is updated.
